Health information about the UK’s ethnic minorities may be inaccurate, according to a new study. Edinburgh University experts found cultural taboos and translation problems may have distorted key data concerning cancer and heart disease. The two online dating profile are the main killers in ethnic minority communities and scientists have called for improved surveying methods. They believe greater accuracy in medical surveys could save more lives.
Doctors need up-to-date and accurate information on smoking and drinking habits in order to fight cancer and heart problems. But social taboos may make it difficult for some people from ethnic minority backgrounds to answer questions on such subjects. The researchers carried out analysis of 18 key health surveys conducted among ethnic minority groups and found discrepancies. A survey in 1992 revealed that 29% of Ethnic dating men smoked but a survey in 1993/4 stated that 42% of that social group smoked.
Research team leader, Professor Raj Bhopal, said: “Translators from highly educated backgrounds may use “People who speak different languages may interpret concepts, words or phrases in different ways and cultural differences may make some questions offensive, irrelevant or dating online services uk. “Also, taboos of a russian online dating ethnic minority group may affect how people answer certain questions. “For example, Sikhs are prohibited by their religion from smoking, as are Muslims from drinking alcohol. It is socially unacceptable for women from several ethnic minority groups to smoke or to drink.”
